Asbestos is a naturally occurring, non-flammable, flexible, durable, and malleable material that has been used in construction for centuries due to its versatility and strength. However, in recent decades, the severe health risks associated with working with asbestos have come to light. When disturbed, asbestos fibers are released into the air, and if inhaled, these fibers can lead to serious, and sometimes fatal, lung diseases such as Mesothelioma, Asbestos-related lung cancer, Asbestosis, and Pleural thickening. These diseases often take years, even decades, to develop.

Asbestos was not banned in Ireland until the late 1990s, meaning that employees who worked in buildings constructed before this time could be at risk. This Asbestos Awareness Course aims to educate and protect workers from the potential dangers of Asbestos-Containing Materials (ACMs). It also supports employers in fulfilling their legal obligation to provide employees—who are likely to come into contact with ACMs—with the necessary information, instruction, and training to keep them safe.

This course will discuss the importance of asbestos surveys and action plans, as well as the requirement for making these documents available to any tradesperson working on sites where asbestos has been identified.
